Nottingham College has recently completed the development of a new City Hub campus, in the heart of the city centre. The new £58.5m state-of-the-art hub provides fantastic new learning and community facilities to thousands of students.
The completion of the City Hub was a central part of the Colleges’ estates vision ensuring the college occupies modern, fit-for-purpose, and expansive campuses at key locations across the city. As part of the design, an entrance control solution was required to provide safe controlled access into the building. With more than 2,000 students and 200 staff using the building, the College required a reliable and efficient solution.
Following a thorough selection process, Meesons were chosen as the preferred supplier, due to the compliance with the product specification and competitive price.
Meesons arranged a pre-start meeting with the main contractor and the College to gain a greater understanding of their requirements and to review the available space. To help simplify the installation Meesons proposed using a Speed Gate sub-frame solution, which was to be installed below the finished floor. The sub-frame solution enabled the contractor to set out the footprint of the cabinets with the cabling securely routed through the framework to the correct positions. This meant the contractor was able to complete this area of the City Hub development without the Speed Gates being in place, avoiding the risk of damage to the cabinets prior to opening.
Once the tiled floor was complete Meesons installed seven lanes of EasyGate SG 1000 Speed Gates, consisting of six standard width lanes and one wide access lane. The EasyGate SG 1000 was specified due to its streamlined design with a cabinet width of just 120mm and length of 1000mm. The EasyGate SG 1000 made the best use of the available space ensuring there were sufficient lanes to cope with the high number of transits by both students and staff throughout the day. Post-mounted glass infill panels were installed on either side of the Speed Gates to form a secure line, preventing unauthorised access.
After the installation had been completed a Meesons technical engineer provided training on-site to educate college staff on the operation of the Speed Gates.
Since the opening of the City Hub Campus, the Speed Gates have provided an effective deterrent against unauthorised access, whilst enabling the College to securely manage the flow of students and staff.
