There’s one positive to emerge from the pandemic, which is that London’s offices are set to become more cycle-friendly to accommodate commuters’ desires to avoid public transport.
Naturally, there’s plenty of benefits of cycling to work. From a sustainability point of view and supporting green initiatives, to promoting physical exercise and boosting the wellbeing of employees, cycling to work is being encouraged from all angles.
This is all well and good in theory, but there’s one barrier in place (or not…). It’s cycle security in the city centre.
Existing buildings are lacking in adequate facilities, meaning cycling to work isn’t possible for many employees who don’t want to risk having their expensive new bikes stolen.
Developers are being encouraged to include cycle parks in all major new office buildings, accommodating hundreds of bikes. Examples include 20 Ropemaker in the City, which will have 812 cycle spaces, along with Landsdowne House in Mayfair which will include just under 500.
One development in particular which is going above and beyond to accommodate cyclists is 22 Bishopsgate. It will incorporate the largest bicycle park in London with 1,699 spaces, Brompton bikes for hire, cycle maintenance, lockers, showers and a free towel service, making it an attractive destination for tenants for years to come.
There are many effective ways to incorporate cycle parking into a new development or retrofit it into an existing space within a building. Take The Bike Guardian, for example; a smart solution for secure bike parking which prevents bike theft. It cleverly links users to specific bikes, preventing anyone from leaving with a bike which doesn’t belong to them. Its internal sensors also make sure just one bike is present before permitting access, preventing tailgating.
Alternatively, a speed gate provides a high level of security whilst seamlessly blending into a building with its glass wing barriers. The EasyGate SPT – Bike benefits from a higher throughput (up to 15 bikes per minute) which is ideal for busy locations.
Whether you are an employer looking to provide cycle parking for employees, a council looking to build cycle parking hubs or a transport operator trying to offer secure cycle parking for customers, Meesons has a range of cycle parking solutions.
